Defaults to today; change it to count from another date.
Christmas Day falls on December 25 every year, but the number of days between now and then changes with every sunrise — and so does the weekday it lands on. This counter fixes the target on the next December 25 and counts the whole days remaining, so you always know how much shopping, baking, and wrapping time is left. Because it recomputes from the date you are counting from, it works just as well in July as it does on Christmas Eve.
Set the "counting from" date to December 1, 2026 and the counter shows 24 days to go, landing on Friday, December 25, 2026. Divide the days remaining by seven for a rough number of weeks — a handy way to pace holiday preparations.
Because the target is always the next December 25, the count keeps working after the holiday: on December 26 it flips to counting down the following year's Christmas, nearly a full 365 days away.
What date is Christmas?
Christmas Day is December 25 every year. Christmas Eve is the evening before, December 24. The weekday changes from year to year, which is why the counter also shows the day of the week the next Christmas falls on.
How many weeks until Christmas?
Divide the days-to-go figure by seven. For example, 70 days is exactly 10 weeks; 24 days is a little under three and a half weeks.
Does the countdown include Christmas Day itself?
It counts whole days between the date you are counting from and December 25. On December 25 the figure is zero — the day has arrived.
Why does the weekday change each year?
A common year has 365 days, which is 52 weeks plus one day, so a fixed date advances one weekday each year (two after a leap year). That is why Christmas is not on the same day of the week annually.
